The ball valve is a valve that uses a ball with a circular hole channel as the opening and closing parts. With the rotation of the adjusting rod, the sphere rotates around the sleeve line perpendicular to the hole channel to realize the opening and closing action.

A ball valve is a flow control device that uses a hollow, perforated, and pivoting ball to control liquid flowing through it. It is open when the ball’s hole is in line with the flow inlet and closed when it is pivoted 90 degrees by the valve handle, blocking the flow.[1] The handle lies flat in alignment with the flow when open, and is perpendicular to it when closed, making for easy visual confirmation of the valve’s status.[2] The shut position 1/4 turn could be in either clockwise or counter-clockwise direction.

Classification of Valves

At their most basic, valves are devices that work to control, regulate, or direct flow within a system or process.

They often feature a range of characteristics that help to define their ideal application.

Valves provide several functions, including:

  • Starting or stopping flow based on the valve state
  • Regulating flow and pressure within a piping system
  • Controlling the direction of flow within a piping system
  • Throttling flow rates within a piping system
  • Improving safety through relieving pressure or vacuum in a piping system

Classification of Valves according to motion

  1. Linear motion valves – These are the valves that have a stem sliding closure part like a slat, plate or disc, or diaphragm which raises or lowers the closure part by moving the handle or grip to the device. This comes with easy design, easy maintenance, versatility in sizes, pressure classes, etc. These valves are slower in operation but are more accurate in shutting or opening the flow.   2. Rotary motion valves – Rotary valves include a closure part that rotates in the body and opens or shuts the flow when a lever attached is made to quarter turn. They come with larger pore sizes, cost-effective but are limited in applications with pressure drops. Ball Valve Classification

There are four general body styles of ball valves: single body, split body, top entry, and welded. There are four general types of ball valves: full port, standard port, reduced port, and v port.

A full port ball valve has an oversized ball so that the hole in the ball is the same size as the pipeline resulting in lower friction loss. Flow is unrestricted, but the valve is larger.

A standard port ball valve is usually less expensive but has a smaller ball and a correspondingly smaller port. Flow through this valve is one pipe size smaller than the valve’s pipe size resulting in slightly restricted flow. In reduced port ball valves, flow through the valve is one pipe size smaller than the valve’s pipe size resulting in restricted flow.

A v-port ball valve has either a ‘v-shaped ball or a ‘v-shaped seat. This allows the orifice to be opened and closed in a more controlled manner with a closer-to-linear flow characteristic. When the valve is in the closed position and opening is commenced the small end of the ‘v’ is opened first allowing stable flow control during this stage. This type of design requires a generally more robust construction due to higher velocities of the fluids, which would quickly damage a standard valve.

A trunnion ball valve has a mechanical means of anchoring the ball at the top and the bottom, this design is usually applied on larger and higher pressure valves(say 4 inches and above 600 psi and above)

Manually operated ball valves can be closed quickly and thus there is a danger of water hammer. Some ball valves are equipped with an actuator that may be pneumatically or motor (electric) operated. These valves can be used either for on/off or flow control. A pneumatic flow control valve is also equipped with a positioner which transforms the control signal into the actuator position and valve opening accordingly.

  • 1. According to the structural form, the ball valve can be divided into a floating ball valve, fixed ball valve, elastic ball valve, and oil seal ball valve.
  • 2. According to the channel, it can be divided into straight type, angle type, and three-way type, and the three-way type can be divided into T-shape and L-shape.
  • 3. According to the connection mode, it can be divided into screw connection, flange connection, and welding connection.

Main Advantages of Ball Valve

  • Suitable for frequent operation. It can be opened and closed quickly and easily;
  • The fluid resistance is small. Its resistance coefficient is equal to that of the same length of pipe section;
  • Simple structure, small relative volume, lightweight. It is easy to maintain
  • Plastic is widely used as a sealing surface material, which has good sealing performance;
  • Simple operation, quick opening, and closing:
  • It is not limited by the installation direction, and the flow direction of media can be arbitrary:
  • It has no vibration and its noise is small.
  • When the valve is fully open or closed, the sealing surface of the ball and the valve seat shall be isolated from the medium. When the medium passes through, the valve sealing surface will not be corroded.
  • They provide leak-proof service,
  • Open and close quickly,
  • Compared to gate valves, they have very small dimensions,
  • Compared to gate valves, they are lighter,
  • The multi-designed flexibility does not exist in the Gate or Globe valve, and hence it lowers the number of valves needed,
  • These valves are manufactured in different sizes and shapes providing flexibility in selection,
  • The high-quality valves provide safe service under high temperature and high-pressure conditions, and
  • Compared to other valves, they are controlled with less force.

Ball valve Installation and Maintenance, the Following Should be Noted

  • 1. There should be space for the valve handle to rotate.
  • 2. It cannot be used as a throttle.
  • 3. Ball valve with a driving mechanism shall be installed vertically.
